The Album

This is The Martian Way's first album, it was finished in September, 2004 and sent off to the major record companies who rejected it. Special prize to BMG who rejected it first! It was one of the last things they did as an independent company. Let the others beware.

It is a composition of songs that I had written in my teens and early twenties. It is autobiographical in the sense that all the songs did stem from events that happened to me during those turbulent years when I was growing up, HOWEVER, they have been revised and edited, both musically and lyrically in order that they fit the pattern of this album. In a few cases the finished product barely resembles the original, and in most cases the finished product has been noticeably altered. In all cases the final product has been greatly polished by my arrangements.

The story of the album is NOT exactly what happened to me. For instance, the idealised girl in the album is actually a composite of several girls, and obviously the story didn't end the way it does on the album.

Synopsis

An easy going, drug-taking, motorcycle-riding, unemployed young man of 20 is longing to find a girl to love and be loved by. He meets a girl, they have sex, they fall in love.

They move in together and are very happy for a time. They start to argue, it gets worse, she stops giving him sex, they have a big fight and she leaves.

He is heartbroken. He wants her to come back and proposes marriage but she refuses. He is heartbroken again and goes into a deep depression filled with despair.

He takes more drugs and goes quietly insane with the despair. Finally, although he cannot get out of the depression he manages to transcend it and calmly kills himself.

He sings his last love song for her as he stands at the threshold of death.

Maybe this is too harsh a picture of love for Hollywood, but reality is often harsh, and there are probably more failures in love than successes, at least there have been in my life, and I know that most of you are in the same boat. Furthermore it is not unknown for love to lead to suicide, you only have to look at Shakespeare to see that.

On Suicide

Yes, the song: "An Ending Of Pain" was a genuine suicide song. I did want to die at the time, suffering intense depression due to not being able to come to terms with my life. I was contemplating how to do it, BUT, I didn't do it!

A few years later I went through an even greater depression after losing the girl of my dreams, but I stopped my commitments, relaxed and let the tide carry me along. In time I found my answers and was able defeat my demons and the black beast of depression itself, by letting go of my fear and accepting myself for what I really am. It has never returned.

It is important to stress that if I had done it I never would have made this album, never would have produced any of the things on this website of mine and never would have gone on to experience wonderful love with other women and never would have found the self-respect that came later with real achievement.

If you are considering suicide I advise you not to do it. Probably your problems aren't as bad as you think, and even if they are, if you can focus all your efforts onto improving the situation you can probably succeed. You may not end up achieving what you set out to, but you should find that you are living a much better life.

It takes will power. You can't solve a bad situation by sitting on your arse and taking drugs. You have to do the hard yards. And once you start the hard yards you will find they're not so hard after all.

And try to be reasonable. Believing that you are magic, or God, or Jesus, or telepathic, or that the world revolves around you will not lead to happiness, just the loony bin or the end of a rope. Reality is what you can see and touch, not what you can hear in your head. Reality may seem boring, and it is certainly hard, but it is the only way to have a worthwhile life. So if you are mad, just acknowledge it, repent, and throw it away.
